Science Photographer of the Year – SS Thistlegorm

It’s not often that something so close to the topic of Operation CRUSADER gets such recognition. SS Thistlegorm was sunk on 6 October 1941 while waiting to unload off Suez, with all her cargo from Britain. She is now a very famous diving wreck.

The absolutely fascinating set of pictures constructed of her has deservedly won a coveted price. It is a great read.

The unit that sank SS Thistlegorm was II./KG26, a specialised anti-shipping unit flying He 111 planes out of Greece and Crete known as the “Lion Wing”, das Löwengeschwader.

Unknown date and location, propaganda picture presumably somewhere in North Africa. From Twitter.
